{"id":11813,"date":"2023-06-15T10:42:15","date_gmt":"2023-06-15T10:42:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/presspay.ng\/news\/?p=11813"},"modified":"2023-06-15T10:42:19","modified_gmt":"2023-06-15T10:42:19","slug":"human-right-activist-sowore-weigh-in-on-student-loan-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/presspay.ng\/news\/human-right-activist-sowore-weigh-in-on-student-loan-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"Human Right Activist, Sowore weigh-in on Student Loan Bill"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has faulted the student loans law signed by President Bola Tinubu on Monday 13 June 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/presspay.ng\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Sowore.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11814\" width=\"311\" height=\"311\" srcset=\"https:\/\/presspay.ng\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Sowore.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/presspay.ng\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Sowore-150x150.jpeg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 311px) 100vw, 311px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Omoyele Sowore<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>According to reports Tinubu signed the Student Loan Bill into law which allows Nigerian students to access loans from the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will make provision for funds to be domiciled in the Federal Ministry of Education and will only be accessed by indigent students of tertiary institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reacting to the passage of the Student Loans law, Sowore said that Student Loans were never good for a society that needed to aggressively fund education.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sowore noted that the US had more or less devoured its young and old educated population with student loans, adding that what Nigerian youths needed was free quantitative education at all levels.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to him, <em>\u201cMany US citizens today are victims of education loans whereas the US spends unconscionable amounts in fighting wars that benefit none of their citizens.<\/em>\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cEvery student in our educational institutions at the higher levels should earn nothing less than N100,000 per semester as a study grant.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cEven the US has evolved past this stage and are now seeking ways to massively forgo student\u2019s loans<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added, <em>\u201cI have spoken extensively about loans because I am still owing student loan sharks 20 years after graduating from Columbia University in New York.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cNothing good will come out of students&#8217; loans.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Source: Sahara Reporters<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has faulted the student loans law<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":11814,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"colormag_page_container_layout":"default_layout","colormag_page_sidebar_layout":"default_layout","footnotes":""},"categories":[48],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-11813","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-presspayng-tribe"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
