Addressing those challenges requires creativity \u2013 and the time and support to think innovatively. That\u2019s where ICFJ\u2019s Leap news innovation program comes in.<br><br>Leap is a space to explore and shape the unfolding future of journalism.<br><br>We are supporting journalism innovators in several ways:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Innovation lab:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Solution Challenges:&nbsp;<\/strong>A 12-week program to explore, design, and develop products and learn innovation processes&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hackathons:&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;Events where developers and journalists can meet and invent together.&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fellowships:<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp; Support for innovators working on tools and products that are helping journalism thrive.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About the Leap Solution Challenges<\/strong><br><br>Mentors will lead small news teams through a 12-week design sprint and development process to solve a specific problem.<br><br>Every challenge focuses on a specific theme; this year&#8217;s program focuses on &#8220;AI and Journalism: Unmasking Disinformation in the Digital Era.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How It Works<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.icfj.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2023-08\/Leap%20Program%20Diagram.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Explore<\/strong>&nbsp;(four weeks): Two workshops a week with experts in the field to map the landscape, identify needs and introduce new tools to address them.<br><br><strong>Sprint<\/strong>&nbsp;(three weeks including half-days on Saturdays): An intensive Design Thinking process to rapidly develop and test a project or a product prototype.&nbsp;<br><br><strong>Develop<\/strong>&nbsp;(four weeks):&nbsp; Teams work with mentors to develop their ideas enough to integrate into their newsrooms or pitch it to a funder for further development. We will provide grants to build out the best ideas.<br>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/airtable.com\/appQdJHUSs9Ue09iy\/shr7knpAtt36MmICm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Apply to the 2023 Solutions Challenge<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong><a><\/a>Solution Challenge Program Selection Criteria:<\/strong><br>We encourage small teams from the same organization to apply together so they can better implement what they create. But we also accept applications from individuals to form a group around a common goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leapis right for you if you are a journalist, technologist or product person who:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Can identify a journalism challenge and work to solve it with AI tools<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Likes to collaborate with others&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wants to be a changemaker<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is ready to commit at least three hours a week&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is willing to share your product or outcomes with the journalistic community<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is fluent in English<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>About ICFJ\u2019s goal is to identify the most pressing challenges affecting journalism and its mission to serve the public.
