The\u00a0Academic Staff Union of Universities\u00a0(ASUU) has stated that the proposed student loan scheme will keep students\u00a0in perpetual debt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This was contained in a statement on Thursday 15 February after the union\u2019s National Executive Council meeting at the Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island, Bayelsa State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
ASUU argued that the Students Loan Scheme, being pushed by international money lending agencies like the International Monetary Fund and World Bank would deprive public universities of funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The statement reads: \u201cFor the avoidance of doubt, the NEC of ASUU reiterated its rejection of the Students Loan Scheme which is being promoted by international money lending agencies such as IMF and World Bank.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cNigerians should be aware that the scheme is a way of starving public universities of funding and a ploy to divert public funds into private universities owned by politically exposed individuals and their friends.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cNEC further observed that the students\u2019 loan scheme will mortgage the entire university system and keep our promising students in perpetual indebtedness.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Source: The Nation<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" The\u00a0Academic Staff Union of Universities\u00a0(ASUU) has stated that the proposed student loan scheme will keep students\u00a0in perpetual debt.
