{"id":22596,"date":"2024-07-12T15:56:17","date_gmt":"2024-07-12T15:56:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/presspay.ng\/news\/?p=22596"},"modified":"2024-07-12T15:56:19","modified_gmt":"2024-07-12T15:56:19","slug":"alternative-heritages-and-the-republic-magazine-opportunity-for-emerging-writers-photographers-and-illustrators","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/presspay.ng\/news\/alternative-heritages-and-the-republic-magazine-opportunity-for-emerging-writers-photographers-and-illustrators\/","title":{"rendered":"Alternative Heritages and The Republic Magazine (opportunity for emerging writers, photographers, and illustrators )"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The French Embassy in Nigeria, in partnership with StoryMi and The Republic Magazine, is thrilled to announce a unique opportunity for emerging writers, photographers, and illustrators to explore and celebrate Nigeria\u2019s cultural and historical heritages through diverse forms.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Objective: This special issue of The Republic Magazine aims to create a thought-provoking and visually stunning magazine that showcases alternative perspectives on Nigerian heritage. \u201cHeritages\u201d can be defined as \u201cAlternative\u201d when being forgotten and facing long-term peril of disappearance, or because they represent recent creations by minority, marginalized, and\/or protesting groups, institutions, and individuals. It can be monuments, but also language, religion, tradition, music, history\u2026 everything that makes Nigeria such a unique and diverse country in Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through this residency, we seek to amplify diverse voices and perspectives, fostering a deeper appreciation for our collective heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Program Details:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Duration: 3 months (August \u2013 October)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Location: One-week workshop residency in Ibadan (24th to 30th of August),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2-month online mentorship sessions (September-October)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Participants:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>5 writers ( nonfiction preferably)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3 photographers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2 illustrators<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Publication: Selected works will be featured in a special edition of The Republic Magazine, set for publication in December.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mentors and Instructors<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants will have the opportunity to work closely with acclaimed professionals from around the world, gaining valuable insights and guidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.andrewesiebo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Andrew Esiebo<\/a>: A visual storyteller who integrates Multimedia practice and artistry. His works have been published globally in Books, Magazines and websites (The National Geographic, New York Times, Courrier International, Washington Post Financial Times, Guardian Online). He is considered one of the best African photojournalists of his generation.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/dianaejaita\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Diana Ejaita:<\/a>&nbsp;A Nigerian-Italian&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Illustrator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">illustrator<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Textile_design\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">textile designer<\/a>. She lives between B<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Berlin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">erlin<\/a>, Germany, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lagos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lagos<\/a>. In 2014, Ejaita started a fashion label, called WearYourMask, inspired by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/West_Africa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">West African<\/a>&nbsp;traditions and her Italo-Nigerian heritage. In 2019, she illustrated a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_Doodle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Google Doodle<\/a>&nbsp;commemorating the 119th birthday of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Funmilayo_Ransome-Kuti\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti.&nbsp;<\/a>Ejaita has designed eight covers for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_New_Yorker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The New Yorker<\/a>&nbsp;and two covers for The Republic magazine.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dipofaloyin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dipo Faloyin<\/a>: Senior editor and writer at VICE, where his work focuses on culture, race and identity across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. His writing has also featured in the Guardian, Esquire, Newsweek, Dazed and others. He was born in Chicago, raised in Lagos and currently lives in London.
