Vanier Scholars demonstrate leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in graduate studies in the social sciences and humanities, natural sciences and\/or engineering and health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Candidate Eligibility<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Citizenship<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada&nbsp;<strong>and<\/strong>&nbsp;foreign citizens are eligible to be nominated for a Vanier CGS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Eligibility to Apply for a Vanier CGS<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>be nominated by\u00a0<strong>only one<\/strong>\u00a0Canadian institution, which must have received a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vanier.gc.ca\/en\/appendix_b_cgs_2024_25_to_2026_27.html\">Vanier CGS quota<\/a><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/vanier.gc.ca\/en\/eligibility-admissibilite.html#fn1\">Footnote1<\/a><\/sup>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>be pursuing your first doctoral degree (including joint program such as MD\/PhD, DVM\/PhD, or JD\/PhD, MBA\/PhD \u2013 if it has a demonstrated and significant research component);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>intend to pursue, in the summer semester or the academic year following the announcement of results, full-time doctoral (or a joint graduate research program such as MD\/PhD, DVM\/PhD, JD\/PhD, MBA\/PhD) studies and research at the nominating institution; For joint graduate research programs, only the PhD portion of the program is eligible for funding.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>have completed\u00a0<strong>no more than 20 months<\/strong>\u00a0of full-time study in your doctoral program as of May 1, 2025;\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The doctoral program would begin after the completion of a master\u2019s degree. The months of study completed are calculated from the doctoral enrolment date.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>have completed\u00a0<strong>no more than 32 months<\/strong>\u00a0of full-time study in your doctoral program (i.e., joint graduate research program, directly from bachelor\u2019s, previously enrolled without obtaining master\u2019s degree, transferring or withdrew from program), by May 1, 2025 if:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>enrolled in a joint graduate research program, e.g., MD\/PhD, MA\/PhD, MS\/PhD, DVM\/PhD. Applicants in this category have access to the 32-month window whether or not they were previously enrolled in a master\u2019s program:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The months of study are calculated starting from the date on which an applicant is officially registered in the joint graduate program. (For MA\/PhD or MS\/PhD, this will be the master\u2019s registration date).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>enrolled directly from a bachelor\u2019s to a PhD program (without having been previously enrolled in another graduate program);\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The months of study completed are calculated from the doctoral enrolment date.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>previously enrolled in a master\u2019s program\u00a0<strong>without obtaining the degree, transferring or withdrawing from the program<\/strong>\u00a0and subsequently starting a doctoral program.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The months of study completed are calculated from the original master\u2019s enrolment date.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>have achieved a first-class average, as determined by your institution, in each of the last two years of full-time study or equivalent. Candidates are encouraged to contact the institution for its definition of a first-class average; and\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Note: Institutions may, at their discretion, accept Vanier CGS applications from individuals who have not obtained a first-class average; contact your proposed host institutions to determine their use of this eligibility criterion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>cannot have already received a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca\/students-etudiants\/pg-cs\/cgsd-bescd_eng.asp\">CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC<\/a>\u00a0to undertake or complete a doctoral program.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Please note that only the PhD portion of a joint program is eligible for funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Eligibility of program of study<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An eligible doctoral program must include a significant research component that leads to the completion of a thesis, major research project, dissertation, scholarly publication, performance, recital and\/or exhibit that is merit\/expert-reviewed at the institutional level as requirement for a completion of the program.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Joint graduate research programs<\/strong>\u00a0with a professional degree (e.g., MD\/PhD, DVM\/PhD, JD\/PhD, MBA\/PhD) as well as clinically-oriented programs of study, including clinical psychology, are eligible programs if they have a significant autonomous research component, as described above.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Timeline:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>For students:<\/strong>\u00a0Consult nominating institution for submission deadline.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>For nominating institutions:<\/strong>\u00a0Deadline:\u00a0<strong>October 30, 2024 (20:00 EDT).<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Nomination Process<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Applications are initiated in one of two ways. Either:\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the student informs the faculty of graduate studies at the selected institution of their intent to apply to the Vanier CGS program; or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the institution initiates the nomination process by contacting the desired candidate.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Applications are prepared by the student and submitted to\u00a0<strong>the nominating institution by their internal deadline<\/strong>\u00a0(set in ResearchNet by the nominating institution) using the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchnet-recherchenet.ca\/\">ResearchNet<\/a>\u00a0application system.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The nominating institution performs the internal candidate selection process. The institution is responsible for notifying candidates if their application is not selected for nomination to the Secretariat.
