You might not have enough motivation, for example, or time to actually see the work through;\u00a0or you might not even have a solid idea to begin with &#8212; yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But where most people get stopped cold is their realization&nbsp;that it takes&nbsp;<em>money<\/em>&nbsp;to start a business &#8212; money they don\u2019t have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, consider: There are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sba.gov\/starting-business\/finance-your-business\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">loans, grants, and other fundraising options<\/a>, like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/topic\/crowdfunding\">crowdfunding<\/a>,\u00a0available to get you what you need; so money is\u00a0<em>not<\/em>\u00a0a good excuse not to start a business. And, beyond that, there are certain types of businesses you can start with almost no cash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What it takes to start a business<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your first step is to explore what it takes to formally \u201cstart\u201d a business, and which of those items cost&nbsp;money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Planning.<\/strong>&nbsp;You\u2019ll need to come up with a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/article\/247575\">business plan and financial model<\/a>, of course, but you can do this on your own, for free.<\/li><li><strong>Business license.<\/strong>&nbsp;If you\u2019re planning on creating a partnership, LLC&nbsp;or corporation, you\u2019ll need to file some paperwork &#8212; but it probably won\u2019t cost you more than a few hundred dollars, depending on what licensing you need. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sba.gov\/starting-business\/business-licenses-permits\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Small Business Administration&nbsp;has plenty of resources<\/a>&nbsp;to help you figure out what you need, how to obtain it&nbsp;and how much it will cost.<\/li><li><strong>A domain name.<\/strong>&nbsp;You\u2019ll need to invest in your online brand early on; while I suggest going as professional as possible, you could also use a bare-bones approach to launch, if yours is&nbsp;a minimum viable product. Often, a catchy domain name is all you need to define your brand at the start, and one can be bought for as little as $10 (if you can find one that isn\u2019t taken!). I use&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.godaddy.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">GoDaddy<\/a>&nbsp;to buy domains.<\/li><li><strong>A website.<\/strong>&nbsp;Website builders these days are free and intuitive to use. You won&#8217;t expend&nbsp;anything but time to build your first site. I recommend starting simple with a widely-used website platform, like&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">WordPress<\/a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wix.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wix<\/a>.<\/li><li><strong>Marketing.<\/strong>&nbsp;While marketing has a reputation for being very expensive, there are actually a ton of really effective tactics that can be performed with only an investment of your time. Social media marketing, SEO&nbsp;and content marketing all fit within this category &#8212;&nbsp;and, honestly, those are really all you need.&nbsp;<em>Entrepreneur<\/em>&nbsp;has a great selection of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/aerbook.com\/store\/EntrepreneurBooks\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">how-to books<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/store.entrepreneur.com\/collections\/online-courses-marketing\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">online courses<\/a>&nbsp;that cover this subject.<\/li><li><strong>Equipment.<\/strong>&nbsp;Equipment, offices&nbsp;and other tangible assets are cash killers, but not all businesses need them. Some businesses don\u2019t require any of these things, as I\u2019ll explain shortly.<\/li><li><strong>Products.<\/strong>&nbsp;Finally, all businesses need to sell&nbsp;<em>something<\/em>, which usually means some up-front investing. However, many services can be performed with an investment of time rather than money.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Types of businesses to start<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So, which types of businesses can be started without a heavy financial burden in any of the above areas? Read on to find out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Business idea: Content provider<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sites like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fiverr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fiverr<\/a>\u00a0offer a great opportunity for writers, editors, photographers, artists and videomakers to book gigs from businesses with an assortment of content needs. For example, if you\u2019re a painter, you could sell your works of art with an investment of nothing more than art supplies and your own time. Platforms like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.etsy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Etsy<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebay.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">eBay<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amazon<\/a>\u00a0cater to creators and make it easy to turn a profit from your work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Business idea: In-home services<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Services don\u2019t cost you any money up-front because they\u2019re intangible goods. And if you\u2019re working in people\u2019s own homes or neighborhoods, you won\u2019t need a physical headquarters for your business. For example, you could start a babysitting service, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/slideshow\/325641#8\">dog-walking<\/a>\u00a0or pet-sitting service\u00a0or something like landscaping or snow-plowing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Business idea: Repair or skill-based services<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have a specific skill, you could use your skilled labor as the main revenue driver for your business. Think about the industry you\u2019re in, and how much you\u2019ve been able to learn in that time.
