{"id":6016,"date":"2022-11-07T12:14:46","date_gmt":"2022-11-07T12:14:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/presspay.ng\/news\/?p=6016"},"modified":"2022-11-07T12:14:49","modified_gmt":"2022-11-07T12:14:49","slug":"canada-graduate-scholarships-masters-program-2023-24","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/presspay.ng\/news\/canada-graduate-scholarships-masters-program-2023-24\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada Graduate Scholarships \u2013 Master\u2019s program, 2023-24"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Objective<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The objective of the Canada Graduate Scholarships \u2013 Master\u2019s (CGS M) program is to help develop research skills and assist in the training of highly qualified personnel by supporting students who demonstrate a high standard of achievement in undergraduate and early graduate studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Description<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The CGS M program provides financial support to high-calibre scholars who are engaged in an eligible master\u2019s or, in some cases, doctoral program in Canada (refer to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca\/Students-Etudiants\/PG-CS\/CGSM-BESCM_eng.asp#eligibility\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eligibility<\/a>&nbsp;for more information). This support allows these scholars to fully concentrate on their studies in their chosen fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CGS M program supports up to 3,000&nbsp;students annually in all disciplines and is administered jointly by Canada\u2019s three granting agencies: the Canadian Institutes of Health Research&nbsp;(CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council&nbsp;(NSERC), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council&nbsp;(SSHRC). The selection process and post-award administration are carried out at the institutional level, under the guidance of the three agencies. Students submit their application to the institution at which they intend to hold their award using the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/portal-portail.nserc-crsng.gc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Research Portal<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Eligibility<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To be eligible to apply, you must<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada or a Protected Person under subsection 95(2) of the&nbsp;<em>Immigration and Refugee Protection Act<\/em>&nbsp;(Canada) as of the application deadline date<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>be enrolled in, have applied for or will apply for full-time admission<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca\/Students-Etudiants\/PG-CS\/CGSM-BESCM_eng.asp#star\">*<\/a>&nbsp;to an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca\/Students-Etudiants\/PG-CS\/CGSM-BESCM_eng.asp#_Program_of_Study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">eligible<\/a>&nbsp;graduate program at the master\u2019s or doctoral level at a Canadian institution with a CGS M allocation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>respect the internal deadline to apply for admission for your intended program of study\u2014contact the faculty of graduate studies (or its equivalent) at the selected Canadian institution(s) for more detailed information<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>have completed, as of December\u00a031 of the year of application\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>either between\u00a0<strong>0 and 12 months<\/strong>\u00a0of full-time studies (or full-time equivalent) in the program for which you are requesting funding,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca\/Students-Etudiants\/PG-CS\/CGSM-BESCM_eng.asp#star2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">**<\/a>\u00a0which may be one of the following:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a master\u2019s program<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a doctoral program that you are entering directly from a bachelor\u2019s program without having ever been enrolled in any graduate programs (direct-entry)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a combined master\u2019s-doctoral program<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a master\u2019s program that will transition to an eligible doctoral program, either before or after award activation, with no master\u2019s degree conferred (fast-track)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a master\u2019s program for which the degree requirements will be completed before the end of the award, allowing the award to continue into an eligible doctoral program<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>or between&nbsp;<strong>4 and 12&nbsp;months<\/strong>&nbsp;of full-time study (or full-time equivalent) in an eligible master\u2019s program for which the degree requirements will be completed before activation of the award, allowing it to be activated during the first 12&nbsp;months of the subsequent doctoral program for which you are requesting funding<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>not have held or be currently holding a CGS M scholarship from CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>have achieved a first-class average<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca\/Students-Etudiants\/PG-CS\/CGSM-BESCM_eng.asp#star2\">**<\/a>, as determined by the host institution, in each of the last two completed years of study (full-time equivalent)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Note:<\/strong>&nbsp;Institutions may, at their discretion, accept CGS M applications from individuals who have not obtained a first-class average; contact your proposed host institutions to determine their use of this eligibility criterion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>submit a maximum of one scholarship (master\u2019s or doctoral) or fellowship application per academic year to either CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Note:&nbsp;<\/strong>Should more than one application be submitted, the eligible application submitted first chronologically will be retained<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Note:&nbsp;<\/strong>Nominations to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/vanier.gc.ca\/en\/home-accueil.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vanier CGS<\/a>&nbsp;program and applications to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/banting.fellowships-bourses.gc.ca\/en\/home-accueil.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships<\/a>&nbsp;program do not count toward this limit (other exceptions may apply to CIHR internships)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Refer to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca\/Students-Etudiants\/Guides-Guides\/TriRTA-TriBFR_eng.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tri-agency research training award holder\u2019s guide<\/a>&nbsp;for details regarding part-time admission.<br>**All studies credited toward the eligible program will be counted, whether or not they were completed at the degree-granting institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a><\/a><strong>Program of study eligibility<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An eligible graduate program must include a significant research component that leads to the completion of a thesis, major research project, dissertation, scholarly publication, performance, recital and\/or exhibit that is merit\/expert-reviewed at the institutional level as a requirement for completion of the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Joint programs<\/strong>&nbsp;with a professional degree (for example, MD\/PhD, DVM\/PhD, JD\/MA, JD\/PhD, MBA\/PhD, MA\/MBA) as well as&nbsp;<strong>clinically oriented programs of study<\/strong>, including clinical psychology, are eligible if they have a significant autonomous research component, as described above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Master\u2019s programs that are based only on course work are typically not eligible since they do not include a significant research component, as described above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given the specific requirements of certain disciplines, institutions are invited to contact the appropriate agency for guidance on the eligibility of programs of study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Eligible locations of tenure<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without exception, CGS M awards are tenable only at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca\/Students-Etudiants\/CGSAllocations-QuotasBESC_eng.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">eligible Canadian institutions<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Field of research and subject matter eligibility<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC support and promote high-quality research in a wide variety of disciplines and areas, which are divided into broad fields of research (health, natural sciences and engineering, and social sciences and humanities). This includes research that bridges two or more disciplines or that requires the skills of several disciplines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You must ensure that you are submitting your application to an institution that has an allocation for the field of research you intend to pursue. Applications deemed by a host institution to have been labelled incorrectly will be re-labelled according to the agency\u2019s research subject matter guidelines (refer to&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.science.gc.ca\/default.asp?lang=en&amp;n=FEE7261A-1\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Selecting the appropriate federal granting agency<\/a>). You should contact the faculty of graduate studies (or its equivalent) at the institution where you intend to hold the award for further guidance on subject matter eligibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Equity, diversity and inclusion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Tri-agency is acting on the evidence that achieving a more equitable, diverse and inclusive Canadian research enterprise is essential to creating the excellent, innovative and impactful research necessary to advance knowledge and understanding, and to respond to local, national and global challenges. This principle informs the commitments described in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca\/NSERC-CRSNG\/EDI-EDI\/index_eng.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tri-agency statement on equity, diversity and inclusion<\/a>&nbsp;(EDI).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Application procedures<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To apply to the CGS M program, you must complete and submit an application to up to three institutions using the Research Portal. Consult the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca\/ResearchPortal-PortailDeRecherche\/Instructions-Instructions\/CGS_M-BESC_M_eng.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canada Graduate Scholarships \u2013 Master\u2019s program: Instructions for completing an application<\/a>&nbsp;for more information on how to apply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Allocations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eligible Canadian institutions are assigned a separate allocation of awards to offer from each agency. Institutions must respect the agency-specific allocation. Refer to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca\/Students-Etudiants\/CGSAllocations-QuotasBESC_eng.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canada Graduate Scholarships \u2013 Master\u2019s award allocations<\/a>&nbsp;page for a list of allocations by institution and by agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>Deadline<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Thedeadline for CGS M applications is&nbsp;<strong>December&nbsp;1, before 8:00&nbsp;p.m. (ET)<\/strong>. Complete applications must be submitted by the deadline using the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/portal-portail.nserc-crsng.gc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Research Portal<\/a>. If the deadline falls on a weekend, applications must be submitted by the following business day before 8:00&nbsp;p.m. (ET).<br><br><strong>Note:<\/strong>&nbsp;As the application deadline approaches, delays may occur due to a high volume of users on the Research Portal, which may prevent the timely submission of your application. Requests to submit late applications will not be accepted.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Selection process<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The faculty of graduate studies (or its equivalent) at each institution is responsible for coordinating the selection process for the CGS M applications. Alternate offers may be made up until January&nbsp;31 of the next calendar year.&nbsp;<strong>It is your responsibility to regularly check the Research Portal between April 1 and January 31 for results of the competition.<\/strong>&nbsp;Refer to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca\/ResearchPortal-PortailDeRecherche\/Instructions-Instructions\/CGS_M-BESC_M_eng.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">instructions for completing an application<\/a>&nbsp;for more information on the notification of results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>Conditions of the award<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Location of tenure<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Awards must be held at the institution where the offer of award originates. Awards are not intended to be portable; however, at the discretion of the host institution and with agency approval, exceptions may be made in certain circumstances (for example, parental reasons, medical reasons, family-related responsibilities, or pandemic).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Policies and guidelines<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You must comply with the policies and guidelines set out in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca\/Students-Etudiants\/Guides-Guides\/TriRTA-TriBFR_eng.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tri-agency research training award holder\u2019s guide<\/a>&nbsp;and in any other documents related to scholarship applications and awards. In addition, the award is subject to final approval by the relevant agency before funds can be released.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You cannot be concurrently holding another CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC award, with the exception of the Michael Smith Foreign Studies supplement (MSFSS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The agencies reserve the right to interpret and enforce the policies and guidelines for their funding opportunities set out in their published materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Use and disclosure of information<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>All personal information collected as part of this program is used by the agencies and by the relevant officials in the eligible research institutions to review applications and to administer and monitor awards. It may also be used to determine the most appropriate funding jurisdiction, or to monitor overlap in federal support. Details on the use and disclosure of this information by the agencies are described by CIHR on the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca\/e\/47695.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Info source \u2013 Sources of federal government and employee information<\/a>&nbsp;web page, by NSERC on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca\/NSERC-CRSNG\/Policies-Politiques\/atip-aiprp_eng.asp#a3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Use and disclosure of personal information provided to NSERC<\/a>&nbsp;web page, by SSHRC on the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca\/funding-financement\/policies-politiques\/f_personal_info-b_info_personnelles-eng.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Collection, use and disclosure of personal information<\/a>&nbsp;web page and in the relevant program literature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each agency may publish the names and other limited award information of award holders on their websites in accordance with the agencies\u2019 policies on disclosure under the&nbsp;<em>Access to Information Act<\/em>&nbsp;and their&nbsp;<em>Privacy Act<\/em>&nbsp;policies and guidelines related to the collection, use, retention and disposal of personal information.
