{"id":6283,"date":"2022-11-17T12:43:04","date_gmt":"2022-11-17T12:43:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/presspay.ng\/news\/?p=6283"},"modified":"2022-11-17T12:43:07","modified_gmt":"2022-11-17T12:43:07","slug":"history-of-university-education-in-nigeria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/presspay.ng\/news\/history-of-university-education-in-nigeria\/","title":{"rendered":"History of University Education in Nigeria"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The word university is derived from the Latin universitas magistrorum et scholarium, which roughly means <em><strong>&#8220;community of teachers and scholars&#8221;<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fatima bint Muhammad Al-Fihriya Al-Qurashiya (\u0641\u0627\u0637\u0645\u0629 \u0628\u0646\u062a \u0645\u062d\u0645\u062f \u0627\u0644\u0641\u0647\u0631\u064a\u0629 \u0627\u0644\u0642\u0631\u0634\u064a\u0629\u200e) founded the world\u2019s first university in <em>895 CE<\/em> in Fez, which is now in Morocco. She is more usually known simply as Fatima al-Fihri and when she and her sister inherited their father\u2019s wealth she used her share to found The University of Al Qarawiynn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The University started as a large mosque and later grew into a place of education. The Madrasa (Islamic School) Al-Fihri founded is still in operation today as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_Al_Quaraouiyine\">the University of Al Quaraouiyine<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The history of university education in Nigeria began with the Elliot commission of <em><strong>1943<\/strong><\/em>, which then lead to the establishment of the University College, Ibadan \u2013 which was at as at the time of its establishment an affiliate of the University of London \u2013 in <em>1948<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The UCI, as it was known for short, suffered a number of problems in its early years, not least among them were poor staffing, low enrolment, high dropout rate, and inadequate funding. In 1959, another commission, the Ashby commission, was set up by the federal government to advise it on the needs of the higher education sector in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following year, however, the eastern region would establish it\u2019s own university \u2013 The University of Nigeria, Nsukka \u2013 at Nsukka.
