History of Niger State Polytechnic Zungeru
Niger State Polytechnic, Zungeru started as Zungeru College of Advanced Studies (ZUCAS), Zungeru. The State Government established ZUCAS by the Niger State Edict No. 7 of 1979 although, it actually began functioning on 10th January, 1977 at the Temporary Site at Government College, Bida. In September, 1984, the institution moved to its permanent site located midway between Zungeru and Wushishi Towns.
The objectives of the College then included the provision of Basic Remedial Studies for the purpose of preparing students for University entry requirements, and offering courses at sub-degree level. The 6-3-3-4 System of Education in Nigeria necessitated a re-definition and re-orientation of the position of the Schools of Basic Studies and Colleges of Advanced Studies.
In realization of this, the Niger State government through Cabinet Conclusion No. C 4(11) of December, 1990 approved the conversion of Zungeru College of Advanced Studies (ZUCAS) into Niger State Polytechnic, Zungeru. Subsequently, Niger State Edict No. 9 of 1991 was enacted with effect from 1st October, 1991 to back up the conversion. The goals and objectives of the Polytechnic as enshrined in Section 4 of the Niger State Polytechnic, Zungeru Edict No. 9 of 1991 are:
To provide instruction, training and research in science, technology, commerce, humanities and management To offer special training courses in these and other related areas with the ultimate purpose of service to community, and To offer course in technology at National Diploma and Higher National Diploma levels.
The introduction and implementation of the 6-3-3-4 new education policy which had no provision for advanced level education attainment, necessitated the phasing out of the programmes of ZUCAS and subsequently its conversion to a state polytechnic by the Edict No 9 of 1991 in July 1997. The State Government formally merged College of Administrative and Business Studies (CABS), Bida with the Polytechnic through the enactment of the Niger State Polytechnic (Amendment) Edict 1991 and CABS, bida (transfer of assets and liabilities edict 1997).
