ASUU, AAU Condemn Actions of Acting VC

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma Chapter has received serious backlash over the matriculation ceremony that was recently held Friday, 16th September 2022 by the University Administration, describing it as deceptive and a violation of its ongoing industrial action.

The statement was contained in a letter signed by Dr. Cyril Oziegbe Onogbosele and Dr. Willam Odion, Chairperson and Acting Secretary AAU’s Chapter of ASUU.

In the statement, the union accused the Acting Vice Chancellor (AVC), Professor Asomwan Sonnie Adagbonyin to run the University by force in order to gain favors from the support of the state government, cover up academic abnormalities in the University and intimidating arrears of staff emoluments (salaries and sundry deductions) for twenty-one (21) months, amounting to over four (4) billion naira.

The statement read in part, “ASUU in particular, earlier denounced the conduct of examinations in some courses by the University Administration in breach of regulatory/professional guidelines and the University’s extant rules and regulations on students’ lectures and examinations”.

“This is an academic mockery which will, in the final analysis, demarket and devalue the certificates being issued and awarded by the University.”

The union also pointed out that the university administration is fraudulently running two different academic sessions (2020/2021 and 2021/2022) simultaneously and kicked against matriculation for the 2021/2022 Academic Session when the old academic session is yet to be concluded.

They said its members are on strike and that many courses were yet to be taught and examined in the old academic session, research projects, seminars to be completed to warrant a new academic session.

The union said that the disharmony between the various staff unions and the university administration sky-rocked when the University Administration announced the reopening of the University for academic activities during the strike by the Unions.

The union condemned the ongoing irregularities in the administration of degree programmes in the University, stating that if unchecked, it would lead to mass production of knowledge-empty graduates with damaging implications for societal development and transformation.

The union urged the Edo State Government to investigate and deal with the weird and fowl state of things in the university.
