ASUU, AAU kicks against Special Intervention Team(SIT)

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has once again kicked against the “Special Intervention Team”(SIT) put in place by the Edo State Government to supervise the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma.

The union also pointed out that the chairman of the team could not be allowed to act as a university Pro-Chancellor.

Recall that The Governor of the state, Godwin Obaseki, had in 2021, inaugurated a 10-man team to supervise activities in the state owned university.

The union also kicked against the planned attendance of the Chairman of the committee to a meeting organised by the National Universities Commission(NUC).

According to ASUU, the chairman of the SIT, Mr. Andrew Olotu, was planning to attend the meeting in his capacity as Pro-Chancellor.

There have been reports that the NUC had convened a meeting with the Pro-Chancellors and other principal officers in the university system due to incessant strike by ASUU.

However, while speaking with a correspondent on Monday, the Vice-President of ASUU, Dr. Chris Piwuna, said, “The Union is aware that the Chairman of the Special Intervention Team, which is not in the organogram of the Nigerian University System, is in Abuja to attend the referenced meeting as Pro-chancellor of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma.

“He is not a Pro-chancellor. His attendance has grave implications on the regulatory role of the NUC and may jeopardise the suit in the court of law against the SIT law by the Union.”
