ASUU Extends Strike by 3months.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has extended its ongoing strike by three months. This announcement was made at the end of the union’s National Executive Committee (NEC) emergency meeting which held in Abuja on Sunday 8 May 2022.

ASUU president, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, reiterated that the union resolved to this decision in order to give the government ample time to satisfactorily meet all their demands. Recall that ASUU initially went for a one month warning strike on the February 14, and rolled it over by eight-weeks on 14 March 2022 at the end of the initial one month warning strike.

According to Prof. Osodeke: “After extensive deliberations, noting Government’s failure to live up to its responsibilities and speedily address all the issues raised in the 2020 FGN/ASUU Memorandum of Action (MoA).

“The roll-over strike action will take effect from 12.01 a.m. on Monday, 9th May 2022.

Some of ASUU’s demands include the release of revitalization funds for universities, renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement, release of earned allowances for university lecturers, and deployment of the UTAS payment platform for the payment of salaries and allowances of university lecturers.
