JAMB has No Right To Conduct Admissions –Prof. Osodeke
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board(JAMB) has no right to conduct higher institutions admission.
A statement signed by the National president, ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, said JAMB’s action of taking charge of higher institutions admission procedures was an intrusion into the University’s autonomy sovereignty.
ASUU further explained that JAMB had no power to make such decision regarding to candidates qualification for admission and had no power to offer admission or remove programmes from universities.
In his words:
“The sovereignty of universities has been under increasing threat, due to JAMB meddling in admission processes and regulation of academic activities in the Nigerian University System.“
JAMB was created by an Act of the National Assembly in 1978 to be responsible for the appointment of examiners and collection/dissemination of information on all matters relating to entrance examinations into a tertiary institution in Nigeria only. And it is the absolute right and duty of each University senate to oversee all academic matters in the University which includes setting the admission requirements and approval of University undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
Therefore “We call upon JAMB to abstain from Exceeding its original decree and allow Universities to carryout admission policies and processes.”
