Education Profile of Rwanda President, Paul Kagame

Paul Kagame, born on October 23, 1957, in Tambwe, Ruanda-Urundi (now Rwanda), experienced early displacement when his family fled to Uganda in 1962 due to ethnic tensions. Despite the challenges of life as a refugee, Kagame remained committed to education. He began schooling at the Nshungerezi refugee camp, later attending Rwengoro Primary School, where he developed resilience and discipline.

For secondary education, he studied at Ntare School, a prestigious Ugandan institution, but faced disciplinary issues that led to his suspension. Undeterred, he continued his studies at Old Kampala Secondary School, broadening his understanding of leadership and strategy.

Beyond formal schooling, Kagame’s most transformative education came through military training. In the late 1980s, he attended the United States Army Command and General Staff College in Kansas, where he gained advanced knowledge in leadership, strategy, and modern military tactics. This training played a key role in his leadership within the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF), contributing to the end of the 1994 genocide and Rwanda’s post-war recovery.

Though he never earned a traditional university degree, Kagame’s education—shaped by hardship, military discipline, and strategic learning—prepared him for governance. As president, he has prioritized education as a tool for national development, focusing on STEM, digital literacy, and vocational training to empower Rwanda’s youth.
