FG vs ASUU: NIC fix a date for final ruling
The National Industrial Court(NIC) has fix Wednesday, September 21 to rule on the lawsuit filed by the Federal Government(FG) against the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) about the ongoing strike.
Justice Peter Hamman fixed the date on Monday 19 September after the lead counsel to the Federal Government, Barr. James Igwe, argued his application seeking an order of the court preventing ASUU from prolonging nationwide strike.
Recall that the federal government had approached the industrial court to challenge the ongoing industrial action by the striking lecturers. But the court, at the first sitting last Friday, adjourned the suit until Monday (September 19) to hear the temporary injunction of the government.
Barr. Igwe had asked the court to hasten the suit due to the urgency of the matter to enable students to return to school. He also suggested that since the matter was already in court, it would be proper for the industrial action to be called off, pending the determination of the suit.
But counsel to ASUU, Femi Falana (SAN), said the union was currently meeting with stakeholders to ensure that the matter was resolved and appealed to the government to cooperate with the union to resolve the impasse.
