Girls are More Educated than Boys- JAMB Registrar

The Registrar of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, has revealed that Nigerian girls are more educated than boys. He stated this at a lecture commemorating the elevation of Morufat Balogun to the rank of a Professor at the University of Ibadan and the 55th birthday celebration of her husband, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, in Ibadan on Sunday.

According to him, year in year out, at least 60 percent of those registering for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination,  UTME, are girls. Prof. Oloyede, advised Nigerians against the discrimination of a girl-child, particularly in the area of education.

In his words: “The education of every child, whether male or female,is very important, but more attention should be given to education of the girl-child. Every child, male or female deserves to be educated.”

According to the available the statistics from Universities, if you go to the registration centre now, you will see that less than 60 percent of those registering for JAMB are girls.

This present statistics used to be from a particular part of the country before, but it has spread across the whole of the country now.

Speaking about the new professor, Mr Oloyede pointed out that her father gave birth to seven daughters, some of whom are now doctors, pharmacists, and lecturers, amongst others.

According to Prof. Oloyede, giving birth to only females by the father of the professor took nothing from him, it was simply an indication that everyone must strive to educate their children, whether male or female.

In Mrs Balogun, the celebrant’s remark, the celebration of the girl-child education was borne out of the need to increase awareness on more effective utilisation of women around the world.
