Glorious Vision University and Pax Herbal Clinic & Research Laboratories Holds Second Collaborative Conference and Exhibition

The College of Basic and Applied Sciences, Glorious Vision University ,Ogwa, Edo State in collaboration with Pax Herbal clinic and Research Laboratories, Ewu, Edo State, a fortnight ago held her second International Conference which focused on “Africa Medicinal Plants: Issues and Prospects in Management of Diseases in the 21st Century.”

• Advises active collaboration between Nigerian universities and Research Institutes
• Calls for integration of ideas from both the orthodox and Herbal practitioners and the Development of plant vaccine in Nigeria

The College of Basic and Applied Sciences, Glorious Vision University ,Ogwa, Edo State in collaboration with Pax Herbal clinic and Research Laboratories, Ewu, Edo State, a fortnight ago held her second International Conference which focused on “Africa Medicinal Plants: Issues and Prospects in Management of Diseases in the 21st Century.”

At the event which drew participants from within and outside the University some of whom participated virtually, the Vice Chancellor Professor A. Babatunde Idowu, represented by Professor J.U. Idialu, the Dean of the Postgraduate School, GVU, welcomed all the participants to the COLBAS PAX HERBAL second international conference. He said technology has actually made the world a small village and as such thanked participants who joined via Zoom.

In his welcome address earlier, the Acting Dean, College of Basic and Applied Sciences, Dr.  Kingsley E. Enerijiofi, said the Chosen Theme for the Conference was very apt considering the re-awakened interest in the pharmaceutical use of plant based product. He emphasized that the COLBAS PAX Herbal collaboration is intended to provide an interphase between the academia and the industry. He emphasized that Africa indeed is blessed with enormous medicinal plants, and therefore admonished Researchers and scholars in different fields to awaken to their responsibility to make Africa and indeed Nigeria a leading destination hub for medicinal plant research, development and products. He said this would also put the African Researchers in a position to share in the global market for herbal products expected to be about $5 Trillion US dollars by the year, 2050.

Rev. Fr. Anslem Adodo, OBS, Director, Pax Herbal Clinic and Research laboratories, Ewu, Edo State, in his address stated that the collaboration is expected to continue beyond conferences, but in setting example for Nigeria for what it means to translate knowledge into tangible, visible and verifiable results in the life of our nation.

In his keynote address, Professor Babatunde Salako, Director General/CEO, Nigeria Institute of Medical Research, (NIMR), Yaba, Lagos, whose paper was titled: Western Allopathic Medicine and Traditional African Medicine: any Hope for Synergy?  Presented by Dr. Aina Oluwagbemiga, said there was need for synergy of Western Allopathic Medicine and Traditional African Medicine, (the practice of traditional Medicine) in the treatment of dieses and the need for collaboration between Nigerian Universities and their Western Counterparts.

He stated that The Centre for Research in  Traditional, Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CRTCAM) was established in NIRM to support a World Health Organization programme to integrate traditional medical practice into public healthcare in Nigeria and around the globe and to support the work of the WHO Traditional Medicine strategy 2014-2023 and also to assist Federal, State and Local Government in Nigeria, develop policies and implement plans that strengthen the role traditional Medicine  ( TM) plays in keeping the entire population healthy.

Professor Salako said that the Centre is in collaboration with the Nigerian Council of Physicians of Natural Medicine (NCPNM), Pax Habal Clinic and Research Laboratories and other organization for better health care delivery in Nigeria.

Professor Edwin S.  Asemota, Professor of Medicine and CEO, Help Point International Foundation, Germany, in his Lead paper presentation titled: Collaboration Concepts in Scalable interventions involving Achieving Pax Herbal – Glorious Vision University goal, he emphasized the collaboration was apt and should be sustained.

Professor Ezzeldin M. Abdurahman, Professor of Pharmacognosy, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, and the Chairman, Governing Board, Centre for advancement of Research in Non-Communicable Diseases, Ogun State presented Lead paper 11 titled: the Practice of Traditional Medicine in the treatment of Diabetes.

The Edo State Commissioner for Science and Technology, Dr. Bartholomew I.C. Brain, in said the State Government is committed to innovation and Technology and such will be collaborating with the University in the area of Science and Technology. The representatives of the commissioners for Health and Education were also in attendance at the conference.

The highlight of the Conference was the exhibition of fully indigenous herbal products.
