History of Adeyemi Federal University of Education (AFUED)

The Adeyemi Federal University of Education (AFUED), located in Ondo City, Ondo State, Nigeria, has a rich history rooted in the nation’s commitment to teacher education.

Established in 1963 and commencing operations on 22 May 1964 with an initial cohort of 93 students (24 women and 69 men), the institution was named after Canon M. C. Adeyemi, a pioneering educationist in Ondo Province, in recognition of his significant contributions to educational development in the region.

The college was formed by consolidating several institutions that emerged in the 1960s to address the need for trained manpower in secondary schools and teacher training colleges in the Western Region. These included the Teachers College (up to 1963), the Ransome Kuti College of Education, the Olunloyo College of Education, and the Ohio Teachers Project, Ondo.

Over the years, the institution has evolved into a first-class College of Education in Nigeria and the West African sub-region. It currently comprises five schools:

  • Arts and Social Sciences
  • Education
  • Languages
  • Sciences
  • Vocational and Technical Education

These schools encompass a total of 28 academic departments, offering a wide range of programs aimed at producing qualified teachers and conducting research on teaching methods at all educational levels in Nigeria.

In May 2015, under President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, the federal government upgraded the college to a full-fledged university of education. However, the new status was put on hold in August 2015 by the succeeding administration due to the absence of an enabling law. The National Assembly passed the Adeyemi Federal University Establishment bill in December 2018, and it was assented to by President Muhammadu Buhari in December 2021, officially recognizing the institution as a university.

AFUED maintains an affiliation with Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) for its degree programs, ensuring that its academic offerings meet national standards and contribute to the development of the education sector in Nigeria.
