History of African University of Science and Technology (AUST), University

The African University of Science and Technology (AUST), located in Abuja, Nigeria, is a private, pan-African, co-educational, research university established in 2007. It was founded as the first campus of the Nelson Mandela Institution (NMI), a network of centers of excellence in science and technology across Africa. The establishment of AUST was in response to a request from several African Heads of State, aiming to improve sub-Saharan Africa’s capacity in science and technology.

AUST focuses on postgraduate education and research in science and engineering disciplines. The university offers master’s and doctoral programs in areas such as Computer Science, Materials Science and Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Pure and Applied Mathematics, and Space & Aerospace Sciences. Additionally, it offers a master’s degree in Public Administration and Public Policy.

The university attracts students and faculty from across Africa, with visiting professors including Africans working in the diaspora. AUST is governed by the Boards of the NMI and AUST and is advised by an interdisciplinary team of scientists and engineers who are members of the African Scientific Committee (ASC) and the International Scientific Advisory Board (ISAB).

In December 2022, AUST graduated 145 students from 11 countries, including 38 with doctorates, highlighting its role in advancing higher education and research in Africa.
