History of Coal City University
Coal City University (CCU), a private institution in Enugu State, Nigeria, was officially licensed by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in November 2016. However, its origin dates back to 2003, when Rev. Fr. Prof. Stan Ani envisioned a world-class university that would transform education in Nigeria. Although he passed away before the dream became reality, his vision was kept alive by Sir Chinedu Anih, who led the efforts to bring the university to life.

CCU started with just 81 students, 10 academic programmes, and two faculties. Today, it offers a wide range of undergraduate courses across growing faculties, including Natural & Applied Sciences, Arts, Social & Management Sciences, and Education. The university is recognised for its ICT-enabled learning, small class sizes, and early adoption of virtual learning platforms—highlighted by its Southeast-first virtual matriculation ceremony.
The university’s pioneer Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Malachy Okwueze, and current Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Afam Icha‑Ituma, have both contributed to the institution’s strong academic foundation and its growing reputation. With a sprawling campus across Emene and Independence Layout, Coal City University is now ranked among Nigeria’s emerging universities, committed to producing entrepreneurial, socially responsible graduates with global relevance.
