History of Federal College of Education Yola

The Federal College of Education (FCE), Yola, located in Adamawa State, Nigeria, was established in 1974 as part of a national initiative to enhance teacher education. Initially known as the Federal Advanced Teachers’ College (FATC), it commenced academic activities in the 1975/1976 session with 150 students under the leadership of its pioneer principal, Mr. C. Pollock, an expatriate.

In 1984, the institution was renamed the Federal College of Education, and by 1989, it gained autonomy following the establishment of the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), which became the regulatory body for colleges of education in Nigeria.

FCE Yola has since evolved into a prominent teacher training institution, offering various programs aimed at producing qualified educators for Nigeria’s educational system. The college is affiliated with the University of Maiduguri, enabling it to offer degree programs in education.

The college’s campus is strategically situated between Yola town and Jimeta, providing a conducive environment for learning and serving as a bridge between the two cities. Over the years, FCE Yola has maintained a commitment to excellence in teacher education, contributing significantly to the development of education in Nigeria.
