History of Federal Polytechnic, Orogun

Knowledge, they say “is power” and “education is the key”. Certainly, this situation could be felt as the long-awaited and esteemed citadel of learning, the Federal Polytechnic which is situated in Orhomuru-Orogun, in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State commences academic activities as the staffers assume duty, while the lively environment and new phase of businesses have given the commuters a breath of fresh air. This development has, in multiple ways impacted on the economic and social activities of the locals, both in Orhomuru community and the neighboring towns.

Recall that the Federal Government, following a Bill sponsored in the 9th Assembly by the then Deputy President of Senate, His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, CFR approved the establishment of the Polytechnic. The approval for the establishment was made by the former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2022. Thereafter, the Institution advertised for applications from suitably qualified candidates into Academic and Non-Academic positions.

Consequently, after series of interviews during the sellection process under the supervision of the Federal Character Commission (FCC), a total of two hundred persons were employed to kick-start the Institution’s academic activities. Among the pioneering staff of the Institution are one hundred and nine teaching staff and ninety-one Non- teaching staff; all of whom have fully assumed duty while the Integrated Payroll and Personal Information System (IPPIS) capturing process is also ongoing.

Meanwhile, as the Institution “seeks waiver from JAMB to admit students”, state-of-the-art structures have been built with specifications from the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE)– magnificent and gigantic administrative block, offices, lecture halls, lecture theatres, students’ hostels, hospital, ultra modern library, laboratories, I.C.T hall, workshops, quality studio for media practitioners, etcetera.

Quite frankly, the level of work done does not require verbal explanation or description with the evidence on ground. Similarly, because the Management of Federal Polytechnic Orogun believe that time is efficient and quality education delivery is their hallmark, thus, the Institution is on course to get students admitted to engage them academically; paving way for their exploration for opportunity to acquire knowledge or skills for self-reliance to become economically just at the end of their programme. To this effect, Deans of Schools have been appointed, as well as Heads of Departments and different Directorates. And most assuredly, this year’s Academic Session (2023/2024 Academic Session) would be basically National Diploma (ND) and the “Skills Acquisition” programmes respectively. These three Schools and the thirteen Departments have been prepared just to kick-off.
