History of Tai Solarin College of Education, Ogun State

Tai Solarin College of Education, formerly Ogun State College of Education, was established in 1978 by the Ogun State Government to produce teachers for primary and secondary schools in Ogun State and Nigeria in general. At the time of its establishment, the College operated temporarily at Igbeba in Ijebu-Ode before it was moved to its permanent site at Ijagun village, a suburb of Ijebu-Ode. The College took off with an initial student’s intake of 187 for the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE). The name of the College was changed in 1994 to Tai Solarin College of Education to honour Late (Dr.) Tai Solarin, a foremost educationist from Ikenne-Remo in Ogun State after his demise on 27th July, 1994 by the State Government for his laudable contributions to the development of education in Nigeria.

The College was ranked first among States and private Colleges of Education in Nigeria by the Supervisory body of the Colleges of Education, National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) for its academic excellence and also ranked fourth out of the then over 70 NCE awarding institutions in the country including Federal Colleges of Education in 2002.

The College was transformed into the first University of Education in Nigeria and second in West Africa, (University of Education, Winneba, Ghana is the first university of education in West Africa) by Otunba Gbenga Daniel led Administration in Ogun State in 2005.

After its transformation, the University of Education continued to run both degree and NCE programmes till 2008 when the College of Education was moved out of the University to stand on its own as requested by the supervisory body of Colleges of Education, National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE); and it was relocated to a new site which formerly housed Omu-Ajose Community High School in Omu-Ijebu with 474 staff which were disarticulated from the University of Education. A new edict was enacted for Tai Solarin College of Education, Omu-Ijebu.
