Legislative intervention- senate approves additional law school campuses.
The senate has approved seven(7) new law campuses in the six geo-political zones of the country.
The Chairman of the Committee, Opeyemi Bamidele On Tuesday 8th February 2022, said this creation came as a legislative intervention to address the exponential increase in the number of law graduates from home and abroad and to also address the backlog that has existed over the years.
In his words:
Existing campuses are overstretched and the infrastructure are not enough to accommodate thousands of law students graduating from the nation’s universities.
These newly approved law schools are in addition to the six(6) existing ones, which bring to a total number of 13 law schools in the country, excluding that of the Federal Capital Territory. The new campuses are namely;
“Kabba Law School Campus, Kogi, and Jos Law School Campus, Plateau for the North-central geo-political zone.
“Maiduguri Law School Campus, Borno, in addition to Yola Law School Campus, Adamawa to serve the North-east zone.
“Argungun Law School Campus, Kebbi in addition to the existing Kano Law School Campus, Kano State in the North-west
“Okija Law School Campus, Anambra in addition to the already existing Enugu Law School Campus for the South-east
“Port Harcourt Law School Campus, Rivers and Orogun Law School Campus, Delta in addition to the already existing Yenegoa Law School Campus, Bayelsa for the South- south zone.
“Ilawe Law School Campus, Ekiti to the already existing Lagos Law School Campus, Lagos for South-west
And The Bwari Law School Campus, Abuja, remains exclusively for the Federal Capital Territory.
The bill which was sponsored by Smart Adeyemi, but got an approval as a result of the consideration and adoption report by the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters on the Legal Education Act (Amendment) Bill, 2021.
