Prof, Lawrence: start-up capital should be provided for students.
The Vice-Chancellor of Igbinedion University, Okada, Edo State, Prof, Lawrence Ezemonye, has urged universities to give student start up capital for businesess to ensure the growth and sustainability.
He disclosed this on Wednesday 2nd February 2022, while declaring open the University’s “9th Students Product Exhibition and Trade Fair.” where more than 700 students across various colleges of the University were trained under the entrepreneurship and skill acquisition programme of the institution.
According to the The VC, the students had proven over time that the idea of skill acquisition is noble, as entrepreneurship had become a trend for survival and sustenance in recent times.
In his words:
“Unemployment is becoming embarrassing with its high statistics. And this is not peculiar to only Nigeria, but also across the globe, particularly due to economic recession and the effect of the global pandemic.
“And besides, the employability of our graduates is another serious concern as unemployment is on a rise.
“Prof. Ezemonye also said some University graduates are underemployed, most of them engage in demeaning jobs not fit for a garduate as a means of survival.
“These and many other valid reasons brought about the introduction of this entrepreneurship program into the University’s curriculum 10 years ago, and this effort have become a flagship for other tertiary institutes in Nigeria, therefore Universities should encouraged these students by giving them a start up capital for business to ensure their growth and sustainability.
