Applications are now open up to 15 March 2023 for the Social Connectedness Fellowship which empowers students and recent graduates to carry out innovative research that will inspire local and global action to build community and belonging. From May-August, Fellows alongside their partner organizations, conduct research to address issues relating to social isolation and belonging. They connect with experts in their field as well as communities who can inform their research, engage virtually and creatively with the communities their research is designed to serve, and recommend program and policy solutions to help foster connectedness and build belonging. Fellows will have the opportunity to work with a partner organization and conduct research, writing, analysis, and outreach in thematic areas related to social isolation and connectedness.

What is social connectedness?

Achieving social connectedness means working towards a society where everyone is valued, seen and heard; where everyone can exercise their basic human rights and live a rich and fulfilling life; where solidarity, trust and cooperation pave the way for inter and intra community bonds; where people can exercise their agency and have the opportunities to achieve substantive freedoms. In essence, it means building a society where everyone—no matter their age, race, gender, sexual orientation, ability, or political affiliation—has the opportunity to belong. Social connectedness is grounded in three values: respect, recognition, and reciprocity.

About Samuel Centre for Social Connectedness (SCSC)

The Samuel Centre for Social Connectedness (SCSC) is a non-profit centre for research and advocacy dedicated to overcoming social isolation and building social connectedness. As a research and advocacy hub, the Samuel Centre for Social Connectedness is engaged in a number of research partnerships, and runs programs and events that engage the wider community. Mission is to build connectedness within and between communities through partnerships, research, programming, learning initiatives, and advocacy. We are a dynamic group of people who are working collaboratively to create a more compassionate and caring world. We focus on the areas below;

Awareness

We raise awareness by bringing people together across disciplines and sectors to explore issues of social isolation. We do this through our bi-ennial Global Symposium, local community events, and our SC Fellowship Program and Common Threads project.

Advocacy

Through our research, events and partnerships with organizations that are working to build inclusion and belonging, SCSC engages in community-driven advocacy that upholds human dignity and agency.

• Competitive wages (the wage is 22 to 24 Canadian dollars per hour for 35 hours per week)

Eligibility

• Fellows are required to be ready to engage in regular online meetings, check-ins, capacity building sessions and remote work.

• Have a passion for building a more inclusive, and connected world.

• Commit 35 hours per week to the program.
