We Will Not Backdown- ASUU.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said they are not going to backdown on their decision to continue with the industrial action due to Federal Government’s failure to honour the 2009 agreement.

According to ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, the union took the ‘difficult decision’ after exhausting all options available to settle the matter with the Federal Government.

In his words: “The problem is the will of the government to resolve issues, for instance when the airline operators said they were going to stop the flights, the Senate and House of Representatives quickly stepped in because they are affected.

“Why would they not resolve that of the education sector that is affecting the poor masses and the ordinary people?

“If the government is willing to resolve the issues affecting the Nigerians, then there would be no need to go on strike.

“We talk of negotiation of the agreement, the proliferation of universities, among others, so there are lots of issues that they have not resolved.”

Prof. Osodeke reiterated that aside from failing to pay earned salary areas, the Federal Government had also refused to accept UTAS as our preferred payment platform that had been tested and passed with a score of 99.3 per cent.

He further urged the Federal Government to do the needful in order for students to return back to school.
