ASUU Strike: Students Block Lagos-Ibadan Expressway
Following a protest by the National Association of Nigerian Students, many commuters were stranded on Tuesday along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway. It is gathered that the aggrieved students had blocked the expressway, protesting the ongoing one-month warning strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, and the Federal Government’s failure to fulfil the 2009 FG-ASUU Agreement.
The students who had gathered at the Redeemed Church axis of Mowe as early as 8am today, also protested against the current fuel scarcity in the country, thereby causing a commotion on the ever-busy highway.
The NANS Chairman in Ogun State, Mr Damilola Simeon, who spoke on behalf of the students, urged FG to concede to the demands of ASUU, he also made a appealed for both the FG and ASUU, to come together and find a lasting solution to the incessant strikes that had crippled academic activities in universities across the country, making the affected students helplessly idle.
In his words: “Our time is being wasted if ASUU keeps going on strike non stop. Age will be not be on our side by the time we graduate and go into the labour market.
“Most of us staying in private hostels are forced to pay house rent again without having to make use of the previous one that was paid. Some students are already demoralized and probably get involved in illegal activities.”
On the issue of fuel scarcity, Mr. Simeon pointed out that the scarcity has very unpleasant effects on the citizens, especially the demoralized Nigerian students, adding that the government needs to restore normalcy as soon as possible.
