History of Division Agricultural Colleges
Early in the 1950s, a Veterinary Training Centre of the Northern Nigeria government to train Field Assistants in livestock management was established. The centre was later developed to run a two-year certificate course, at which point it became part of the Veterinary Field Station which comprised of a Veterinary Public Health Unit, Trypanosomosis Unit, Poultry Production Unit, and the Veterinary Investigation Laboratory. Administered by the defunct Northern Nigeria Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources, the creation of states in 1968 saw the centre transferred to the Interim Common Services Agency (ICSA) and later in the same year, it was transferred to the Nigerian Livestock and Meat Authority (NLMA) with the exception of the Veterinary Investigation Laboratory which was placed under the Veterinary Research Institute, Vom (NVRI).
The Veterinary Public Health Unit and Trypanosomosis Unit were then taken over by the federal government and constituted into the Federal Livestock Department (FLD). The centre was initially administered by the Institute of Agricultural Research (IAR) until June, 1971, when it was formally transferred along with other schools of agriculture at Kabba and Samaru, to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria to be established and administered as Division of Agricultural Colleges and Livestock Services Training (DALST). As a semi-autonomous body of the agricultural complex of the university, the names of the Schools were later changed to Colleges; College of Agriculture and Animal Science, Mando and the Division became simply Division of Agricultural Colleges (DAC) as decided by the council of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. This change became effective from 21st February, 1977 and the College was established in accordance with statute 16 of A.B.U. Zaria.
