The Southern Illinois University Scholarship is a graduate assistantship (Master’s or PhD) opportunity for international students to study and research in the USA.

The Spatial Wildlife Ecology Lab at Southern Illinois University is seeking an outstanding MS
or PhD student beginning Fall 2025. The student’s project will focus on developing, field testing and implementing, and comparing several approaches to assess white-tailed deer density in different landscapes across Illinois.

The academic home for the position is at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois under the supervision of Dr. Guillaume Bastille-Rousseau and Dr. Brent Pease. This is a project in collaboration with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Have a BSc or MS (for PhD applicants) in Ecology, Wildlife Ecology, or Biology, or a closely related field,
    with a strong academic record.
  • Excellent quantitative skills. Experience in R and ArcGIS/Pro software.
  • Previous experience with camera traps data, road surveys, or operating UAVs is desirable.
  • Knowledge regarding spatial ecology.
  • Ability to perform fieldwork.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills including a demonstrated ability or potential to publish in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Motivated with an excellent work ethic.
