NUC Approves 2 New Varsities for Lagos -Sanwo-Olu

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted licenses for two new universities to the Lagos State Government.


Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tuesday 25th January 2022, announced the Commission’s approval of the two universities at the public presentation of the book by Oluwatoyin Ogundipe @60 Audacity of Resilience written in honor of Vice Chancellor, University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka to celebrate his 60th birthday.
Sanwo-Olu told the gathering that NUC has approved two new universities to bridge the admission gap Lagosians experience every year.

According to him the state government had merged Adeniran Ogunsanyo College of Education (AOCOED), Ijanikin and Michael Otedola College of Primary Education (MOCPED), Epe to University of Education and the state government also converted Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH) to University of Science and Technology.
His words: “We know the population of Lagos State, the Lagos State University and UNILAG cannot provide admission space for the teeming population and the growing number of youths seeking higher education., so the conversion had to be implemented.

Sanwo-Olu emphasized that UNILAG made him what he is today in his statement “I am a visitor to LASU but my heart is with UNILAG and education remains the only potent weapon to eradicate poverty and breach all limitations and there is also the need to groom future leaders, as well as develop a curriculum that speaks to the needs of tomorrow.”

Henceforth the Lagos State Polytechnic, Ikorodu would be known as the University of Science and Technology, while Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education merged with Michael Otedola College of Primary Education is upgraded to University of Education.
