Abia State University, bans private cars on campus.

On Tuesday 1st February 2022, in a press statement released by the Registrar, Dr. Acho Elendu, the management of Abia State University, Uturu (ABSU), banned students from driving private vehicles on the campus. This decision was made to curtail the display by students who it is believed acquire these vehicles through of ill gotten wealth such as stealing, internet fraud(in other words yahoo yahoo) and money rituals. Therefore students who fail to adhere to this new directive by the varsity management would face disciplinary actions.

The statement was as follows: “Henceforth, only staff and accredited visitors would be allowed to drive their vehicles into the campus, any student who violates this directive, which is in the interest of the University community, shall face severe disciplinary action.”

It is true that this decision could be of great advantage as most of the times the display of ill gotten wealth could bring about peer pressure amongst their other school mates, hence forces them into doing illegal things just to “feel among” their peers but as much as this decision is of the greater good, one would wonder did the University management try to look at the disadvantages involved? to mention these disadvantages but a few;

“Not all student who bring their vehicles to school are internet fraudsters or ritualist, as some of those vehicles are bought for them by their parents.

“There are students who have health challenges that does not permit them to walk a long distance as some lecture halls on campus can be far from each other.

“Even students who are of aged such as the ones running their post graduate programmes would be greatly affected too, as most of the are no longer agile as the used to be.

For these few reason and many more that are not being mentioned, it will be of great benefit if the university can show some level of concession and lay down procedures to differenciate these students from the ones who get their wealth illegally.
