NUC Set to Rid Nigerian Universities of Fake Professors.

The National Universities Commission has directed university vice-chancellors to compile a comprehensive list of full professors in their respective institutions.

The letter, marked, NUC/AP/UNIGEN/VOL.II/32, was titled, ” Need to check fake professors in Nigerian Universities.” The NUC directive explained that it received a correspondence from the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation on the need to check fake professors in Nigerian universities.

The commission asked the VCs to forward the list which must include the names of the professors, department, year of professorship, and area of specialisation.

This was contained in a letter dated June 6, 2022, and addressed to all the vice-chancellors by the commission’s Director, Academic Planning, Dr N. Saliu, on behalf of the NUC Executive Secretary, Prof Abubakar Rasheed.

Due to news reports, the directive followed reports about the epidemic of fake professors in the nation’s tertiary institutions.

Prof. Rasheed, who revealed this during a retreat with vice-chancellors, explained that the commission had to send their names to the various universities for verification, adding that the details of the fake professors had been published on the official website of the commission.

According to Prof. Rasheed, “About 100 fake professors also uploaded their details but we detected them. This measure helped in identifying fake professors in the system. The fight against fake professors is a collective responsibility.”
