Osun State SAED, Organizes Counselling & Job Advisory Programme for Corp Members

The Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) Branch of the Osun State National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has recently held a Job Advisory and Counselling programme for the 2021 Batch B stream 1 Corps members across the four zones, namely: Osogbo, Ife, Ikirun and Ilesa in a bid to prepare the corps members for life after their service year.

The NYSC Osun State Coordinator, Mrs Abdulwahab Olayinka at the flag-off charged the Corps members to take the JAC programme seriously as the Scheme in a bid to help her members overcome the challenges of life after service initiated the programme urging them to heed to the various counsels of the experts that will handle the different segments.  

The State Coordinator who was represented by the Zonal Inspectors of the different Zones told the Corps members that now is the time for them to put into practice all they had learned during the service year and the SAED training they had acquired stating that the skill acquired will help to sustain them while they are searching for their dream jobs.

She appreciated the facilitators for their willingness to share their expertise and technical know how with the Corps members which according to her will go a long way in helping the members make a right career choice and also help them build their career. 

Mr. Holy Michael, an official from the International Institute of Safety Management who facilitated the training in Osogbo Zone, enlightened Corps Members on the basics of job acquisition. He stated that they need to be prepared for the labor market if they are to survive because employers are full of demands, therefore, the importance of preparation cannot be overemphasized. Holy stated that one of the ways to be prepared is to gain experience in a particular field. 

He further stated that every Organization is first a business, therefore they are on the lookout for job seekers that will help them fulfill their goals by adding value to their Organization. 

He stated “Corps members must look inward and recognize the values they can offer, and one of the ways one can add value is by acquiring professional skills. Skills Acquisition is a relevant tool for employment”.

Going further, he admonished Corps Members to use their Media presence wisely and effectively. “You must make posts that are relevant to the kind of job you seek” he highlighted. 

He said that social media is the platform where jobs are mostly advertised and employers go-to Social Media platforms while researching Job applicants. 

He also stated that there are three things a job should offer to Job seekers; firstly,  a job should be connected to one’s passion, secondly, a job must add value to one’s life and thirdly, a job must give you a sustainable livelihood. 

Proceeding, he advised Corps members to get job experience. ” The fastest way to get a job is through an internship,” he said.  He also advised them to dress appropriately for interviews and endeavor to carry out thorough research on Organizations they apply to while adding that Job seekers should be more value-motivated.

In the same vein, Dr Adetayo Ireoluwa and Mr. Banjo Babatunde of the International College of Safety and Management Professional, Osogbo charged Corps members in the Ife Zonal Axis to acquire the requisite job experience through trainings and retraining’s. The duo enlightened the members on how to write resume, answer interview questions, dress for interviews and ways to add value to themselves thereby increasing their worth and employability. 

The programme had in attendance Local Government Inspectors of the different LGs in the Zones.
