Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University(SMU) VC Explores Collaborative Opportunities with UNILAG VC

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU), Pretoria, South Africa, have commenced talks aimed at initiating collaborative efforts between the two universities. To this end, the Vice-Chancellor, University of Lagos, Professor Oluwatoyin T. Ogundipe, FAS, on Wednesday, August 10, 2022, received the Dean, School of Science & Technology, SMU, Professor C. Larry Obi at his Office.

Professor Ogundipe, who heartily welcomed Professor Obi, highlighted the preparedness of the University of Lagos for international collaborations. He pointed out that the University has a Research Office positioned to drive such collaborations. He noted that the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics & Research) of the University, Professor Bolanle Oboh, was the immediate past Director of the Research and Innovation Office.

Professor Oboh, who was part of the University’s team to receive Professor Obi, spoke at length on the University’s drive for innovative research According to her, the University has been able to attract over ₦18 billion research grants as well as successfully establish several research centres. She affirmed the University’s willingness to partner with universities across Africa and the world at large. She proposed that further virtual meetings should be held to address the mutual interests of both universities.

In response, Professor Obi affirmed that there were several avenues for partnership between the two universities. He shared his readiness to have a draft Memorandum of Understanding sent to UNILAG for appraisal and further discussions.

The meeting came to a close with group photographs and presentation of a token of goodwill from the University of Lagos to Professor Obi.
