List of Lucrative Nigerian Scholarships for Undergraduate and Postgraduate Students 2023/24

As a Nigerian student with limited financial resources, it is important to look out for Lucrative Nigerian scholarship opportunities to fund your educational pursuit both at the undergraduate or postgraduate level. There are several scholarship opportunities out there for Nigerian students which could be accessed to study at home or in a foreign country.

As a student, there are different bills to be sorted out ranging from tuition fees, accommodation, feeding, transportation, research and many others. Aside from the financial benefits of landing a lucrative scholarship, there is also the prestige that comes with being identified as a scholar of a particular scholarship funding body.

There are other benefits that include Graduate Development Schemes, Entrepreneurial sponsorship and many others.

There are several scholarship sponsors in Nigeria which can be utilized for educational advancement. There are Federal Government Scholarships, State Government Bursaries, Scholarships by Telecommunication Companies, Scholarships by Oil Companies to mention a few. The following are lucrative scholarships available for Nigerian students:

  1. Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) Scholarships

The Petroleum Technology Development Fund, the Federal Government of Nigeria agency has the mandate of developing indigenous human capacity and petroleum technology to meet the needs of the oil and gas industry. The scholarship sponsors students at home and overseas educational institutions at the masters and doctoral level.

The overseas scheme was developed to offer candidates the opportunity to benefit from a diversified pool of knowledge and the facilities offered by world-class institutions across the globe. Under it, candidates are invited to apply through PTDF to specific programmes at the partner institutions. The award includes the provision of flight tickets, payment of health insurance, payment of tuition and bench fees (where applicable), and the provision of allowances to meet the costs of accommodation and living expenses.

  1. MTN Scholarship

MTN Scholarships, under the Youth Development Cause, is an annual award that seeks to recognize and reward qualified high performing students in Nigerian Public Tertiary Institutions: MTN Science and Technology Scholarship, currently in its 12th year, is open to eligible 300 level students studying Science & Technology-related courses, in Nigerian Public Tertiary Institutions (Universities, Polytechnics, and Colleges of Education). 300 successful students are awarded scholarships worth N200,000.00 annually till graduation if they maintain the required grades.

There is also the MTN Scholarship for Blind Students and the Top 10 UTME Scholarship which awards N200,00.00 to top 10 scoring candidates in UTME s announced by Jamb from their 100 level through to graduation if they maintain the required grades.

  1. Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Scholarship

Nigeria LNG awards scholarships to Nigerian students because education and human capital development has been identified as intrinsic and fundamental to national development. NLNG has three main levels of scholarship schemes: Post Primary, Under Graduate and post Graduate to encourage academic excellence as well as support human capital development in Nigeria.

The NLNG Scholarship takes into consideration the reality of the economic situation of Nigeria and can support a student through its educational pursuit if the required grade is maintained.

  1. Agbami Scholarship

This is a scholarship program that seeks to support Engineering and Medical students in Nigeria. It is supported by Star Deep and its Agbami partners. It is an important aspect of the Agbami partners’ Social Investment in Nigeria’s strategic development of health and education, particularly in the Niger Delta. The Agbami Scholarship for undergraduate students is open to Nigerian undergraduate students in the 100 and 200L.

With almost 10,000 recipients, this scholarship is perhaps the happiest undergraduate prize in Nigeria. The Agbami scholarship application program is worth NGN100,000 for Engineering students and NGN200,000 for Medical students. It is open to first-year and second-year students at Tertiary institutions.

  1. Jim Ovia Foundation Scholarship

The Jim Ovia Scholars Program was founded since 1998. It is fully funded by Mr. Jim Ovia to provide financial aid to outstanding Nigeria youths. The scholarship was previously known as the MUSTE scholarship. Eligible awardees are supported for their undergraduate and graduate study for the duration of their program and includes tuition and maintenance allowances.

The scheme offers an average of 100 opportunities each year for new applicants while renewing applicants are supported annually, conditional on meeting all eligible requirements of the scholarship.

  1. Federal Government (BEA) Scholarship

The Federal Scholarship Board through the Federal Ministry of Education of Nigeria provides scholarships to Nigerian students through the Bilateral Educational Agreement (BEA) Scholarship Awards for Undergraduate, Masters and PhD students to study Overseas and the Federal Government scholarship awards tenable in Nigerian tertiary institutions.

Successful students are being sent to study in participating countries where their educational needs are taken care of. The participating countries are responsible for the tuition and accommodation, while Nigeria government takes care of supplement, warm clothing, health insurance, research grant where applicable and take off.

  1. NNPC/Chevron Joint Venture Scholarship

The scholarship is officially sponsored by Chevron and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation aimed at helping many Nigerian undergraduate students across various Nigerian universities to achieve their educational dreams. The scholarship can take the scholar through his/her undergraduate studies in as much as the required grade is maintained. The sum of N100,000 is offered to their scholars till their final year of study.

  1. NDDC Postgraduate Scholarship

Though the scholarship offering has been put on hold in recent years, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Postgraduate Scholarship is one of the lucrative scholarships for Nigerian students to study abroad. As part of their Human Resource Development initiatives, NDDC supports Postgraduate Foreign Scholarship Programme to equip Niger Deltans with relevant training and skills for effective participation in the Local Content programme of the current Administration as well as compete globally in various professional fields.
