ASUU Elects Prof. Chris Piwuna as New National President
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has appointed a new leader. At the union’s 23rd National Delegates Congress held in Benin City on Sunday, Prof. Chris Piwuna emerged as the newly elected national president, succeeding Prof. Victor Osodeke.
Prof. Piwuna is a consultant psychiatrist at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital and currently serves as the Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos. He is recognized for his commitment to mental health advocacy and student welfare—a background that could introduce a fresh and student-centered perspective to ASUU’s national leadership.

His election marks a significant transition, especially given his medical background, which differs from the traditional academic profiles of past ASUU presidents. His close engagement with students positions him to better understand the challenges they face both on and off campus.
The position was keenly contested between:
- Prof. Chris Piwuna (University of Jos)
- Prof. Adamu Babayo (Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi)
Delegates from various universities across Nigeria participated in the voting process. Prof. Piwuna emerged victorious and has officially assumed office.
As ASUU ushers in this new leadership, many are hopeful that it will lead to more effective dialogue and reforms in Nigeria’s university system—particularly in areas affecting both staff welfare and student learning conditions.
