Education Profile of Prof. Femi Mimiko, PressPayNg Advisory Board Member

Nahzeem Olufemi Mimiko born on 1 May 1960 in Ondo State, Nigeria is a Professor of Political Science at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Nigeria.

He attended Ondo Anglican Grammar School in 1973 and St. Joseph’s College from 1973 to 1977. He obtained a B.Sc. (Political Science) and M.Sc. (International Relations) from Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile Ife, Nigeria. He also trained, earning three degrees – B.Sc. Social Sciences (Political Science), 1982; M.Sc. International Relations, 1984; and Ph.D. International Relations, 1992.

He undertook post-doctoral training at The Thomas J. Watson Jr. Institute for International Studies, Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, USA (1993); and The Academy of Korean Studies, Songnam-si, Kyonggi-do, Seoul, South Korea (1996). His research interest is in Comparative Political Economy, International Relations, Development and Transition Studies, Policy and Strategic Studies, and Higher Education Governance. Mimiko was University Post-graduate Fellow at the former University of Ife (now OAU), Ile-Ife (1983/84); SSRC-MacArthur Foundation Visiting Scholar (1993); Korean Foundation Visiting Fellow (1996), and Fulbright Scholar (2004). As Fulbright Scholar, Mimiko was Visiting Professor at the United States Military Academy (USMA), West Point, New York, USA, under the Military Scholar Initiatives. He is recipient, United States Military Academy Army Commander’s Public Service Award, 2004; University of Texas at Austin Africa Conference Distinguished Public Service Award, 2011; and Ibadan Cultural Group, University of Ibadan/TOFAC Africa and the African Diaspora Excellent Leadership Award, 2013. In in 2010, Mimiko was conferred with the honour, Commander of Great Ife, by the Great Ife Alumni Association.

A celebrated teacher, and an accomplished Keynote Speaker at academic conferences, Mimiko has authored several academic papers, and at least six books, amongst which is “Globalization: The Politics of Global Economic Relations and International Business,” Durham, NC: Carolina Academic Press, 2012. Some of his more recent publications are “Getting Our Universities Back On Track: Reflections and Governance Paradigms From My Vice-Chancellorship,” Austin, TX: Pan-African University Press, 2017; and “Democradura’: Essays on Nigeria’s Limited Democracy,” Durham, NC: CAP, 2017. His latest work, “Context and Content in Nigeria’s Foreign Policy” is in press.

Professor Mimiko was at various times Head of Department of Political Science, Dean of Faculty of Social and Management Sciences, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, and Acting Vice-Chancellor at Adekunle Ajasin University (AAUA), Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State; where he later served as the fourth Vice Chancellor, from 2010 to 2015. Before then, he was Head, Department of Political Science, Obafemi Awolowo University, from 2008 to 2010; and has the distinction of being the first alumnus of the Department to occupy a professorial chair. He was African and African-American Studies Associate, at Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, USA, 2016-2017, after which he returned to his chair at OAU.

Mimiko was a participant on Senior Executive Course (SEC) 37, 2015, of Nigeria’s most prestigious think-tank, the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru – the first and only one in OAU. He is also a member of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), International Political Science Association (IPSA), Institute of Public Administration of Canada (IPAC), Fulbright Alumni Association of Nigeria (FAAN), Canadian Association of African Studies (CASS), and African Centre for Security Studies (ACSS). A Delegate to the 2014 National Conference, Professor Mimiko is the Gbóbaníyì of Ondo Kingdom. He is married to Bosede, an Economist and Lawyer, with whom he is blessed with children. Femi Mimiko’s hobbies include gardening, ballpoint collection, and photography. He likes to workout; plays golf; and is currently trying to hone his ability on the violin.
